Mitochondrial disease was initially thought to be a rare disorder. However, recent research has demonstrated that mitochondrial disease may affect one in 200 Australians. Symptoms may be very mild, such that affected persons may not necessarily realise that they have mitochondrial disease, thus remain undiagnosed in the community. However increased awareness of affected persons will lead to earlier symptomatic treatment and recognition of the disorder.
