A SYMPOSIUM AND NETWORKING EVENT FOR ALL THOSE INTERESTED IN CURING GENETIC DISEASES
Since the human genome was first sequenced in 2005, there has been an explosion in our understanding of genetic diseases. Is Australia ready for where this will take us, and how will it be funded?
Join a select group of health sector leaders to hear eminent Australian and world experts, in Sydney for the World Human Genome Meeting 2012, address and discuss these issues.
AMDF is conducting a morning symposium exploring the topic of personalised medicine. We aim to develop a collaborative relationship with other foundations involved in funding genetic diseases in Australia.
Confirmed speakers are:
Prof Richard Gibbs
Director of the Human Genome Sequencing Center and Chair of Molecular and Human Genetics, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston
A leader in developing and applyingtechnologies for rapid genetic analysis, and involved with the Human Genome Project and the Human Microbiome Project
Prof James Lupski
Vice Chair of Molecular and Human Genetics, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston
Renowned for his groundbreaking work on the molecular basis of 'genomic disorders' (aterm he coined), including sequencing his own genome in the interests of science
Prof John Christodoulou
Director of the Western Sydney Genetics Program, The Children's Hospital at Westmead; Professor, Disciplines of Paediatrics and Child Health and Genetic Medicine,University of Sydney; member, NHMRC Human Genetics Advisory Council
A world-leading researcher and clinician in human genetics, particularly metabolic and neuro-developmental disorders in children
Prof David Thorburn
NHMRC Principal Research Fellow; Head of Mitochondrial Research, Genetic Disorders Theme; and Leader, Genomics & Personalised Medicine Research Affinity Group at the MurdochChildrens Research Institute, Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne.
An expert on the genetic basis of mitochondrial energy generation diseases, including the use of Next-Generation Sequencing in diagnosis

Global Mitochondrial Disease Awareness Week is a time where mitochondrial disease related organisations from all around the world join forces to promote our joint cause - to find a cure for mitochondrial disease. The week sees a hive of events internationally and provides a great opportunity to lobby governments to raise the profile of mitochondrial disease.
In 2011 the AMDF was joined by ten other organisations from the likes of Canada, Europe, NZ and the USA and other groups have expressed interest in joining the cause in 2011.
For more information see the Global Mitochondrial Disease Awareness Week website.
To close off Global Mitochondrial Disease Awareness Week, Stay in Bed Day 2012 is scheduled for Sunday 23rd September 2012. This year will see the event build both nationally and internationally with participants already lining up from around the world. Follow the activity in the virtual World Wide Bed - the official Stay in Bed Day Facebook page.
