Counselling and Mental Health


A number of free or subsidised counselling services are available to mito patients, as well as friends, family and carers.

View a list of services below, or get in touch with your general practitioner to get a referral to a counselling service. Face-to-face counselling services may be free or subsidised under the Better Access to Mental Health Care Initiative.

Carer’s Australia provide a national carer counselling program to carers to help cope with responsibilities, and manage caring alongside a healthy lifestyle. Call 1800 242 636 to set up an appointment, or visit the Carer’s Australia website.

GriefLine listens, cares, and supports people experiencing loss and grief via a national telephone counselling service.

Headspace is a youth mental health foundation that provides counselling services to people aged 12-25. They provide online mental health resources, e-counselling, and face to face counselling services. Visit the Headspace website for more information.

Disability Support Services


Guide Dogs Australia provide support services for people who are blind or have low vision. Find out what services are available in your state or territory.

Muscular Dystrophy Australia provides support services for people with a muscular dystrophy, including mitochondrial myopathy and other mitochondrial disorders. Visit the Muscular Dystrophy Australia website for further information.
